During the turbulent years of the 1960s, popular music in America was a strange mixture of protest and patriotism. Some songs lashed out against war, greed, and injustice in society, while others affirmed duty to country and traditional values. But “Pack Up Your Sorrows,” written by Richard Farina and Pauline Baez Marden, seemed to fit all of the categories with its focus on the quest for personal peace. The refrain said the following:		1960년대 미국의 격동기에는 저항에 관련된 노래와 애국심에 관련된 노래가 이상하게 뒤섞여 인기가 있었습니다. 어떤 노래들은 전쟁과 탐욕, 사회의 불의를 통렬히 비난하고 있었고, 다른 노래들은 국가에 대한 의무와 전통적 가치를 지지하였습니다. 그러나 리처드 파리나와 폴린 바에즈 마덴이 썼던 “슬픔을 묶어서”라는 노래는 개인의 평안에 초점을 맞추면서도 저항과 애국 두 가지 관점 모두에 잘 맞아 보였습니다. 노래의 후렴은 다음과 같습니다.

Perhaps everyone hoped that someone really could bring them peace.		아마도 사람들은 모두 어떤 누군가가 정말로 그들에게 평화를 가져다주기를 기대했을 것입니다.
The good news is that there is Someone who can! Isaiah 53 is a prophetic picture of Israel’s promised Messiah. Christians see its fulfillment in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. “Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows . . . . He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed” (vv.4-5).		다행히도 그렇게 할 수 있는 분이 계십니다! 이사야 53장은 이스라엘에게 약속해주신 메시아의 모습을 미리 보여줍니다. 그리스도인들은 예수 그리스도의 죽음과 부활에서 그것이 이루어진 것을 봅니다. “그는 실로 우리의 질고를 지고 슬픔을 당하였거늘......그가 찔림은 우리의 허물을 인함이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악을 인함이라 그가 징계를 받음으로 우리가 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞음으로 우리가 나음을 입었도다”(4-5절).

No sorrow is too heavy for our Savior to bear.		우리 구주께서 감당할 수 없을 만큼 큰 슬픔은 없다.
