As we look forward to the New Year with plans and resolutions, the voices of godly men from the past encourage us to think about something we prefer to ignore—our own death.		계획과 결심을 가지고 새해를 맞이하는 우리에게 과거 경건한 사람들이 남긴 말들은 우리가 무시하려고 애쓰는 것, 곧 우리의 죽음에 대해 생각해보도록 권면해줍니다.
Thomas à Kempis (1379–1471) wrote, “Happy is he that always hath the hour of his death before his eyes and daily prepareth himself to die.” And Francois Fénelon (1651–1715) wrote, “We cannot too greatly deplore the blindness of men who do not want to think of death, and who turn away from an inevitable thing which we could be happy to think of often. Death only troubles carnal people.”		토마스 아 켐피스(1379-1471)는 “자신의 죽음을 늘 내다보며 날마다 죽음을 준비하는 사람은 행복한 사람이다.”라고 썼습니다. 프랑소와 페넬롱(1651-1715)은 “죽음을 생각하기 싫어하는 사람들, 그리고 자주 생각하면 우리를 행복하게 만들 수도 있는 부득이한 것들을 애써 외면하는 사람들의 무지가 참으로 개탄스럽다. 죽음은 세상적인 사람들에게나 두려운 것이다.”라고 기술하였습니다.
These men were not referring to a depressing preoccupation with dying, but a dynamic approach to living. We, like the psalmist David, should pray: “Lord, make me to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am. . . . Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor” (Ps. 39:4-5). David speaks of people who work in vain, heaping up wealth with no idea of who will get it (v.6). He concludes by affirming that his hope is in God, who alone can keep him from a life of spiritual rebellion and disaster (vv.7-8).		토마스 아 켐피스나 프랑소와 페넬롱은 죽음에 관한 우울한 생각을 말했던 것이 아니라, 삶에 활기차게 다가서는 태도에 대해 말했던 것입니다. 우리는 시편기자 다윗처럼 이렇게 기도해야 합니다. “여호와여 나의 종말과 연한의 어떠함을 알게 하사 나로 나의 연약함을 알게 하소서 주께서 나의 날을 손 넓이만큼 되게 하시매 나의 일생이 주의 앞에는 없는 것 같사오니 사람마다 그 든든히 선 때도 진실로 허사뿐이니이다(셀라)”(시편 39:4-5). 다윗은 헛된 일로 바쁘고 누가 취할지도 모르는 재물을 쌓는 사람들을 말하면서(6절), 영적으로 반항하는 삶이나 재난의 삶으로부터 보호해주실 수 있는 유일한 분이신 하나님께만 그의 소망이 있음을 확인하는 것으로 결론을 내립니다(7-8절).
As we place our hope in God, the brevity of our life on earth is worth considering—every day. —David McCasland		우리가 소망을 주님께 둘 때, 이 세상에서의 짧은 인생도 매일 귀하게 여길 가치가 있습니다.
Lord, we know that our life on this earth is so short compared to eternity. Bless us, fill us, use us to tell of Your love and goodness as much we can and for as long as we can until we see You. Amen.		주님, 이 세상에서의 우리의 삶이 영생과 비교해 너무 짧다는 것을 압니다. 우리를 축복하시고,  우리를 채우시고, 우리를 사용하셔서 주님을 뵐  때까지 가능한 한 오래, 그리고 가능한 한 많이  주님의 사랑과 선하심을 전하게 하소서. 아멘.
Considering the certainty of death can provide a dynamic approach to life.		죽음의 확실함을 깊이 생각하면 오히려 삶을 활기차게 살 수 있다.
