On the day before a major surgery, I shared with my friend that I was really scared about the procedure. “What part scares you?” she inquired. “I’m just so afraid that I won’t wake up from the anesthesia,” I replied. Immediately, Anne prayed: “Father, you know all about Cindy’s fear. Please calm her heart and fill her with Your peace. And, Lord, please wake her up after surgery.”		큰 수술을 받기 전날 나는 친구에게 수술 과정이 정말 두렵다고 말했습니다. “무엇이 두렵니?”라고 친구가 물었을 때 나는 “마취에서 깨어나지 못할까봐 두려워.”라고 대답했습니다. 그러자 친구 앤은 곧바로 “하나님, 신디의 두려움을 모두 아시니 그 마음을 평온케 해주시고 하나님의 평강으로 채워주세요. 그리고 수술 후 곧 깨어나게 해주세요.”라고 기도했습니다.
I think God likes that kind of specificity when we talk to Him. When Bartimaeus, the blind beggar, called out to Jesus for help, Jesus said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And the blind man said, “Rabboni, that I may receive my sight!” Jesus said, “Go your way; your faith has made you well” (Mark 10:51-52).		내 생각에 하나님은 우리가 기도할 때 구체적으로 아뢰는 것을 좋아하시는 것 같습니다. 소경 거지 바디매오가 예수님께 도와 달라고 크게 부르짖었을 때, 예수님은 “네게 무엇을 하여 주기를 원하느냐”고 물으셨습니다. 소경이 “선생님이여 보기를 원하나이다” 라고 대답하자 예수님은 “가라 네 믿음이 너를 구원하였느니라”고 말씀하셨습니다(마가복음 10: 51-52).
We don’t need to beat around the bush with God. While there may be a time to pray poetically as David did, there are also times to say bluntly, “God, I’m so sorry for what I just said,” or to say simply, “Jesus, I love You because . . . .” Being specific with God can even be a sign of faith because we are acknowledging that we know we’re not talking to a far-off Being but to a real Person who loves us intimately.		우리는 하나님께 기도하면서 에둘러 말할 필요가 없습니다. 다윗처럼 시적인 표현을 사용하여 기도할 때가 있는가 하면, 솔직하게 “하나님, 제가 방금 말한 것 죄송합니다.”라고 하든지, 그냥 단순히 “예수님, ......때문에 제가 주님을 사랑해요.”라고 기도할 때도 있습니다. 하나님께 구체적으로 말한다는 것은 우리가 멀리 떨어져 있는 존재에게 말하는 것이 아니라, 우리를 친근하게 사랑하시는 실존하시는 분께 말하는 것임을 우리가 알고 있다는 믿음의 표현이기도 합니다.
