When Thomas Gallaudet graduated from seminary in 1814, he had planned on becoming a preacher. However, his call to the ministry took a different turn when he met Alice, a 9-year-old, hearing-impaired girl in his neighborhood. Gallaudet began to communicate with her by writing words with a stick in the dirt.		토마스 갤러댓은 1814년 신학교를 졸업했을 때 설교자가 되겠다고 마음먹었습니다. 그러나 이웃에 사는 9살 난 청각장애인소녀 앨리스를 만나고부터 그의 사역의 방향이 바뀌었습니다. 갤러댓은 막대기로 땅바닥에 글씨를 써서 앨리스와 의사소통을 하기 시작했습니다.
Helping Alice motivated him to help others too. After consulting with European and American experts in educating the deaf, he refined a system widely known today as “signing” (a person’s hands spell out the message). Eventually, he established the American School for the Deaf.		앨리스를 도운 것을 계기로 갤러댓은 다른 장애인들도 돕고 싶어졌습니다. 그래서 그는 미국과 유럽에 있는 청각장애인 교육전문가들의 조언을 구한 후, 오늘날 “수화”(손짓으로 대화 내용을 전하는 것)라고 널리 알려진 체계를 정교하게 발전시켰습니다. 결국 그는 청각장애인학교를 설립했습니다.
Gallaudet’s school for the hearing-impaired contained a Christian curriculum that shared the gospel and included Bible instruction. He had answered the call to preach—but it was to a very special group of people. Signing was the way he communicated the gospel.		갤러댓이 설립한 청각장애인학교에는 복음을 나누고 성경을 가르치는 기독교 교과과정이 포함되어 있었는데, 그곳에서 그는 설교자로 의 부르심에 응답했습니다. 그러나 그것은 아주 특별한 부류의 사람들을 위한 것이었습니다. 그는 수화를 통하여 복음을 전했던 것입니다.
Like Gallaudet, we too should be sharing the Word of God with people in ways they can understand. Otherwise, “How shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Rom. 10:14). How might God want you to reach out to those around you? —Dennis Fisher		갤러댓처럼 우리도 사람들이 이해할 수 있는 방법으로 하나님의 말씀을 그들과 나누어야 합니다. 그렇게 하지 않으면 “저희가 듣지도 못한 이를 어찌 믿으리요 전파하는 자가 없이 어찌 들으리요”(로마서 10:14)라는 말씀대로 될 것입니다. 하나님은 우리가 주위 사람들에게 복음을 어떻게 전하기를 원하실까요?
