James Madison, fourth president of the United States, was instrumental in the drafting of the US constitution. He warned against creating laws “so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood.” Based on some of the complicated government forms I’ve read, that’s advice that still needs to be heeded a little more often!		미국의 4대 대통령이었던 제임스 매디슨은 미국헌법을 초안하는데 중요한 역할을 하였습니다. 그는 “너무 방대하여 읽기 어렵고, 앞뒤가 맞지 않아 이해할 수 없는” 법을 제정하지 말라고 경고하였습니다. 내가 읽어본 정부의 복잡한 서류양식을 생각해보면, 오늘날도 그의 충고에 좀 더 귀를 기울일 필요가 있습니다!
Sometimes when sharing the gospel, we make it more complicated than it needs to be. We can be glad that the Bible presents the good news of salvation in clear, easily understood language. Jesus said to Nicodemus, an educated Pharisee, that “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). He later said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (14:6). The apostle Paul said it in straightforward language to the jailor in Philippi who asked how to be saved: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).		이따금 복음을 전할 때, 우리는 필요 이상으로 복음을 복잡하게 만듭니다. 우리는 성경이 구원에 대한 복음을 분명하고 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 말로 설명해놓은 것을 기뻐해야합니다. 예수님은 교육을 많이 받은 바리새인 니고데모에게, “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 저를 믿는 자마다 멸망치 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이니라”(요한복음 3:16)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 나중에 “내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라”(14:6)고 말씀하셨습니다. 바울사도는 어떻게해야 구원을 얻을 수 있는지를 묻는 빌립보의 간수에게, “주 예수를 믿으라 그리하면 너와 네 집이 구원을 얻으리라”(사도행전 16:31)고 간단하게 말해주었습니다.
