When our first child was born, my wife, Marlene, was in labor for more than 30 hours, creating tremendous stress for both her and the baby. The doctor, a fill-in for her regular physician, was unfamiliar with her and her pregnancy. As a result, he waited too long to make the decision to perform an emergency Caesarean section, and the resulting trauma put our infant son in the neo-natal intensive care unit. There was nothing they could do to help our baby to overcome his trauma-induced condition.		첫 아이가 태어날 때, 아내 말린은 서른 시간도 넘게 진통을 계속했는데, 이것은 아내와 아기에게 엄청난 스트레스를 가져다주었습니다. 아내의 주치의 대신 들어온 의사는 아내와 아내의 임신상태에 대해 잘 몰랐기 때문에 한참 후에야 응급 제왕절개 수술결정을 내렸습니다. 그로 인한 충격으로 막 태어난 우리 아들이 신생아 중환자실에 입원하게 되었습니다. 우리 아기가 충격으로 인해 발생한 이 상태를 극복할 수 있도록 의료진들이 도와줄 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없었습니다.
By God’s grace, Matt recovered—but I cannot remember any moment in my life as terrifying as when I stood by his crib in intensive care. Yet I knew the Lord was near as I talked with Him through prayer.		하나님의 은혜로 아들 매트는 회복되었지만, 내 인생에서 중환자실의 아기 침대 옆에서 있었을 때만큼 두려웠던 순간은 없었던 것으로 기억합니다. 하지만 기도로 주님과 대화할 때 주님께서 나와 함께 계시는 것을 알 수 있었습니다.
In the terrifying moments of life (and all the other moments as well) nothing can bring comfort to the hurting heart like the reality of God’s presence and care. The psalmist David wrote, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Ps. 23:4).		삶에서 두려움을 느끼는 순간에 (그리고 다른 모든 순간에도 마찬가지로), 하나님의 임재하심과 하나님의 돌보심 외에는 마음에 위안이 되는 것이 없습니다. 시편기자 다윗은 “내가 사망의 음침한 골짜기로 다닐지라도 해를 두려워하지 않을 것은 주께서 나와 함께 하심이라 주의 지팡이와 막대기가 나를 안위하시나이다”(시편 23:4)라고 기록했습니다.
