My childhood piano teacher was a stickler for memorization. Being able to play a piece without error was not enough. I had to play several pieces flawlessly by memory. Her reasoning was this: She didn’t want her students to say, when asked to play, “I’m sorry, I don’t have my music with me.”		어린 시절 내 피아노 선생님은 악보를 철저히 암기하도록 시켰습니다. 피아노 곡을 실수 없이 연주하는 것만으로는 충분하지 않았습니다. 여러 곡을 암기해서 실수 없이 연주를 해야만 했습니다. 그녀가 그렇게 한 이유는, 제자에게 피아노를 연주해 보라고 했을 때, 그 제자가 “죄송해요. 지금 악보가 없어요.”라고 대답하는 것을 듣고 싶지 않았기 때문이었습니다.
As a child, I also memorized Bible passages, including Psalm 119:11. Due to my limited understanding, I believed that simple memorization would keep me from sin. I worked hard at memorizing verses, and I even won a Moody Bible Story Book as an award.		어렸을 때 나는 성경구절도 암기했었는데 시편 119편 11절도 그것 중에 하나입니다. 나의 이해가 부족했기에, 나는 성경구절을 그저 외우기만하면 죄를 짓지 않는다고 믿었습니다. 성경구절을 열심히 암기한 덕분에 ‘무디 성경 이야기책’을 상으로 받은 적도 있었습니다.
Although memorizing the Bible is a good habit to develop, it’s not the act of memorizing that keeps us from sin. As I learned soon after my winning efforts, having the words of Scripture in my head made little difference in my behavior. In fact, instead of victory over sin, knowledge alone generated feelings of guilt.		성경을 암송하는 것은 권장할 만한 좋은 습관이지만, 그것이 죄를 피하게 하는 것은 아닙니다. 나는 오랜 기간 노력해본 끝에, 성경구절을 머릿속에 암기하는 것은 내 행동에 별로 변화를 주지 못한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 사실 죄로부터 승리하기 보다는 성경 지식으로 인해 죄의식을 더 갖게 되었습니다.
Eventually I realized that the Word of God had to spread through my whole being. I needed to internalize Scripture, to hide it “in my heart” the way a musician does a piece of music. I had to live the Bible as well as I could quote it. As God’s Word spreads from our heads to our hearts, sin loses its power over us. —Julie Ackerman Link		결국 나는 하나님의 말씀이 내 몸 전체에 퍼져 있어야 함을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 마치 음악가가 악보를 마음속에 품고 있듯이, 성경말씀을 “내 마음속에” 감추고 품어야 합니다. 성경구절을 인용할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 성경말씀대로 살아야만 합니다. 하나님의 말씀이 머리로 부터 가슴으로 퍼질 때, 죄의 세력이 우리를 지배하지 못하게 됩니다.
O Lord, my God, may Your Word become  so much a part of me that obedience  comes naturally and cheerfully from my heart.  Change me and mold me into Your image.		오 주 나의 하나님, 주님의 말씀이 저의 일부가  되어서 자연스럽고 기쁜 마음으로  순종할 수 있게 하소서. 저를 변화시켜  주님의 형상으로 빚어주소서.
