It was a perfect day for our garage sale—bright and warm. People rummaged through clothing, paperbacks, and mismatched dishes. I noticed a young woman looking at a string of white beads. A few minutes later, the necklace vanished along with its admirer. I spotted her in the street, jogged the length of my driveway, and discovered the missing jewelry nestled in her palm. As we faced each other with the knowledge of what had happened, she volunteered to pay for the stolen item.		날씨가 화창하고 따뜻해서 거라지 세일을 하기에 최적의 날이었습니다. 사람들은 옷가지와 책, 그리고 짝이 맞지 않는 접시 등을 이리저리 뒤적거렸습니다. 그 때 한 젊은 여자가 하얀 구슬 목걸이를 보고 있는 모습이 눈에 띄었습니다. 그런데 잠시 후에 보니 그 여자도 목걸이도 사라지고 없었습니다. 길 위에 서 있는 그녀를 발견한 나는 우리 집 차고 진입로 정도의 거리를 천천히 달려가서 그녀 손안에 목걸이가 쥐어져 있는 것을 발견했습니다. 무슨 일이 있었는지 피차 뻔히 알았으므로 그녀는 훔친 물건의 값을 자진해서 지불했습니다.
Zacchaeus, the tree-climbing tax collector, met Jesus and was changed. He vowed to repay four times the amount of money he had dishonestly taken from others (Luke 19:8). In those days, tax collectors frequently overcharged citizens and then pocketed the extra funds. Zacchaeus’ eagerness to pay back the money and to donate half of what he owned to the poor showed a significant change of heart. He had once been a taker, but after meeting Jesus he was determined to make restoration and be a giver.		나무에 올라갔던 세리 삭개오는 예수님을 만난 후에 변화되었습니다. 그래서 사람들로 부터 부정직하게 착취한 돈의 네 배를 돌려주겠다고 맹세했습니다(누가복음 19:8). 그 당시 세리들은 시민들에게 흔히 과도한 세금을 부과하고, 남은 돈은 자기 주머니에 챙겨 넣었습니다. 삭개오가 자청해서 돈을 돌려줄 뿐만 아니라 자기 소유의 반을 가난한 자들에게 나누어주겠다고 한 것은 마음에 큰 변화가 있었음을 보여줍니다. 전에는 남의 것을 취하는 자였지만, 예수님을 만난 후 배상을 해줄 뿐만 아니라 베푸는 자가 되었습니다.
Zacchaeus’ example can inspire us to make the same kind of change. When God reminds us about items we have taken, taxes left unpaid, or ways we have wronged others, we can honor Him by making it right. —Jennifer Benson Schuldt		삭개오의 예는 우리로 하여금 그와 유사한 변화를 하도록 고취시킵니다. 하나님께서 남의 것을 취한 물건이나, 떼어먹은 세금, 혹은 남에게 잘못 행한 방식들을 우리에게 상기시키실 때, 우리는 잘못한 것을 바로 잡음으로써 하나님을 영화롭게 할 수 있습니다.
