A homeless man spends time in our local library. One afternoon, while I was writing there, I took a lunch break. After I finished the first half of a turkey and Swiss cheese sandwich, an image of the man’s face came to mind. A few minutes later, I offered him the untouched part of my lunch. He accepted.		노숙자 한 사람이 우리 동네 도서관에서 시간을 보내곤 합니다. 어느 날 오후, 도서관에서 글을 쓰고 있던 나는 점심시간이 되어 점심을 먹게 되었습니다. 터키와 스위스 치즈를 넣은 샌드위치의 반쪽을 먹다가 그 사람의 얼굴이 마음에 떠올랐습니다. 잠시 후, 그에게 아직 손대지 않은 다른 반쪽의 샌드위치를 먹겠냐고 했더니 그가 받았습니다.
This brief encounter made me realize that with all that God has given me, I needed to do more to help those who are less fortunate. Later, as I thought about this, I read Moses’ instructions on providing for the poor. He told the Israelites: Do not “shut your hand from your poor brother, but . . . open your hand wide to him” (Deut. 15:7-8). An open hand symbolizes the way God wanted His nation to provide for impoverished people—willingly and freely. No excuses, no holding back (v.9). God had given to them, and He wanted them to give generously enough to supply whatever was “sufficient” for the need (v.8).		이 짧은 만남을 통해 나는 하나님이 내게 주신 모든 것으로 나보다 어려운 사람들을 더 많이 도와주어야 한다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 이런 생각을 하던 중에, 가난한 사람들에게 나누어주라는 모세의 가르침을 읽게 되었습니다. 그는 이스라엘 백성들에게 “가난한 형제에게......네 손을 움켜쥐지 말고......네 손을 그에게 펴라”(신명기 15:7-8)고 말했습니다. 활짝 편 손은 하나님께서 당신의 백성들이 어떻게 가난한 사람들을 도와주어야 하는지를 상징하고 있습니다. 기꺼이, 그리고 아무 대가를 바라지 않고 도와준다는 의미입니다. 변명하거나 망설이지 마십시오(9절). 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 공급해주셨고, 그들도 도움이 필요한 이들에게 “넉넉할”(8절) 정도로 충분히 공급해주기를 원하셨습니다.
When we offer open-handed help to the poor, God blesses us for our kindness (Ps. 41:1-3; Prov. 19:17). You may give without loving, but you can’t love without giving.		사랑 없이 줄 수는 있어도,  주지 않고 사랑할 수는 없다.
