When I consider Your heavens,” wrote the psalmist, “what is man that You are mindful of him?” (Ps. 8:3-4). The Old Testament circles around this question. Toiling in Egypt, the Hebrew slaves could hardly believe Moses’ assurances that God would concern Himself with them. The writer of Ecclesiastes phrased the question more cynically: Does anything matter?		시편기자는 “주의 하늘을...... 내가 보오니 사람이 무엇이관대 주께서 저를 생각하시나이까”(시편 8:3- 4) 라고 썼습니다. 구약성경은 이 질문을 반복해서 다루고 있습니다. 애굽에서 고통스러운 노예생활을 하던 유대인들로서는 하나님께서 그들에게 관심을 가지신다는 모세의 확언을 믿기가 어려웠습니다. 전도서 기자는 이 물음을 더욱 냉소적으로 표현하였습니다, “무엇인들 소용 있으랴?”
I was entertaining that same doubt myself when I received an invitation to address a conference on the theme: “I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands” (Isa. 49:16).		“내가 너를 내 손바닥에 새겼다”(이사야 49:16)라는 주제로 열린 학회로부터 강연 초청을 받았을 때, 나도 이런 회의를 품고 있었습니다.
God made this stirring declaration to people suffering through a low point in their history as Isaiah prophesies that they would be taken away captive to Babylon. Hearing this, the people lamented, “The Lord has forsaken me, and . . . forgotten me” (Isa. 49:14). To this lamentation God gave a series of promises—the Servant Songs (Isa. 42–53)—in which He sets the stage of hope for deliverance from hostile enemies. He foretells of the incarnation and sacrificial death of the Servant.		이스라엘 백성들에게 역사적으로 가장 힘든 시련의 시기, 즉 그들이 포로가 되어 바벨론으로 끌려갈 것이라고 이사야가 예언하던 때에 하나님께서 이 감동적인 말씀을 선포하셨습니다. 그러나 사람들은 이 말씀을 듣고도 “여호와께서 나를 버리시며 주께서 나를 잊으셨다”(이사야 49:14)라며 비탄했습니다. 이 같은 비탄에 대해 하나님은 ‘고통 받는 종의 노래’(이사야 42-53장)라고 불리는 일련의 약속들을 주시고, 거기서 이스라엘 백성들이 강퍅한 적들로부터 구원될 것이라는 희망을 제시해주셨습니다. 하나님은 그 약속에서 종으로 오실 주님의 성육신과 그의 희생적인 죽음을 미리 알려주고 계십니다.
