The handwritten prayer request was heartbreaking in its seeming impossibility: “Please pray—I have multiple sclerosis, weak muscles, trouble swallowing, increased pain, diminishing sight.” The woman’s body was breaking down, and I could sense despair in her plea for intercession.		손으로 직접 쓴 기도문을 보며 그것이 응답 받기 불가능해 보여 마음이 무척 아팠습니다. “기도해 주세요. 다중 경화증으로 근육이 약해져가고, 음식을 삼키기가 어렵고, 몸의 고통은 더해가며, 시력이 약해져가고 있습니다.” 기도를 요청한 이 여자 분의 몸은 무너져가고 있었는데, 그 기도요청에서 나는 절망을 읽을 수 있었습니다.
But then came the hope—the strength that trumps the physical damage and degradation: “I know our blessed Savior is in full control. His will is of utmost importance to me.”		그런데 “저는 우리 복되신 구주께서 모든 것을 주관하고 계심을 압니다. 그분의 뜻보다 제게 더 중요한 것은 없습니다.”라고 덧붙여 적은 것을 보면서 나는 손상되고 쇠락해가는 육체를 이기는 힘, 곧 소망이 절망 중에 있음을 보았습니다.
This person may have needed my prayers, but I needed something she had: unabated confidence in God. She seemed to present a perfect portrait of the truth God taught Paul when he asked for relief from his difficulty—what he called his “thorn in the flesh” (2 Cor. 12:7). His quest for relief turned out to be not just a seeming impossibility; his request was turned down flat by his heavenly Father. Paul’s continual struggle, which was clearly God’s will, was a valuable lesson: Through his weakness, God’s grace could be displayed and God’s strength was “made perfect” (v.9).		그녀에게는 내 기도가 필요했을는지 모르겠지만, 내게는 그녀가 갖고 있는 하나님에 대한 흔들리지 않는 신뢰가 필요했습니다. 그녀의 그런 모습은 바울이 “육체의 가시”(고린도후서 12:7)라고 말했던 자신의 어려움을 거두어 달라고 요청했을 때 하나님께서 그에게 가르쳐주신 진리를 완벽하게 잘 보여주는 것 같았습니다. 바울의 기도는 응답받기 불가능해 보이는 기도는 아니었지만 그의 기도는 하나님아버지에 의해 단번에 거절되었습니다. 바울의 계속되는 고통은 분명 하나님의 뜻이었으며 귀중한 교훈이었습니다. 그의 약함을 통해 하나님의 은혜가 나타나게 되었으며, 그 약함에서 하나님의 능력이 “온전하여”(9절)졌던 것입니다.
As we pour out our hearts to God, let’s be even more concerned with seeking His will than we are with receiving the answer we want. That’s where the grace and the strength come from.  —Dave Branon		하나님께 우리 마음을 쏟아놓을 때 우리가 원하는 것을 응답받는 것보다는 하나님의 뜻을 구하는 데 더 많은 관심을 두십시다. 그렇게 할 때 비로소 은혜와 능력이 주어집니다.
Dear heavenly Father, I bring to You my petitions, but I give to You my heart. While I plead for You to answer my prayers, I also submit to Your will so that my heart may be strengthened and Your work be done.		사랑하는 하나님아버지, 저의 간구를 아버지께 들고 나오면서 제 마음도 아버지께 함께 드립니다. 아버지께서 제 기도를 들어주시기를 간청하지만, 또한 나를 아버지의 뜻에 복종시키오니 제 마음이 강해지고 아버지의 뜻이 이루어지게 해주소서.
We pray not to obtain our will in heaven, but to effect God’s will on earth.		우리의 뜻을 하늘에서 이루려고 기도하는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 뜻이 이 땅에서 이루어지게 하기 위하여 기도한다.
