One of the fads of 1970s America was the motorcycle jump. This trend reached its high (and low) point on September 8, 1974. Thousands of spectators gathered around the Snake River Canyon in Idaho to see if Evel Knievel could jump across the chasm in a specially designed “sky cycle.” In the end, however, it was unsuccessful. Knievel made it only part of the way across the gulf before his parachute deployed and he dropped to the canyon floor below. Some spectators asked, “How far across the canyon did he get?” But that wasn’t the point. He didn’t make it all the way across, so he fell short of his goal.		오토바이 점프는 1970년대 미국에서 유행한 것들 중 하나였습니다. 이 유행은 1974년 9월 8일에 절정에 달했고 동시에 바닥으로 추락했습니다. 그날 이블 크니블이 특수 제작된 “하늘을 나는 오토바이”를 타고 아이다호 주에 있는 스네이크강 계곡 사이를 뛰어넘을 수 있는지를 구경하려고 수천 명의 구경꾼들이 계곡 주위로 몰려들었습니다. 그러나 그 시도는 실패로 끝나고 말았습니다. 크니블이 계곡 사이를 조금 날아갔지만 도중에 낙하산이 펴지면서 그만 계곡 밑으로 떨어졌습니다. 어떤 구경꾼들은 “계곡 사이의 어느 정도까지 갔나요?”라고 물었습니다. 하지만 요점은 그것이 아니었습니다. 계곡을 완전히 건너지 못했기 때문에 그가 그의 목표에 이르지 못했다는 것입니다.
This scene is a good illustration of sin. The Bible talks about sin in Romans 3:23, where Paul declared, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” No one is capable of bridging the gap between God and ourselves by our own efforts, but the Savior came to do just that on our behalf. Christ perfectly fulfilled God’s standards, then gave His life on the cross to pay for our failure and wrongdoing. Where we could only fall short, Christ’s work, offered in love, accomplished all that was needed.		이 사건은 죄가 어떤 것인지를 아주 잘 보여줍니다. 성경은 로마서 3장 23절에서 “모든 사람이 죄를 범하였으매 하나님의 영광에 이르지 못하더니”라는 바울의 선언을 통해 죄에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 우리 자신의 노력으로는 어느 누구도 하나님과 우리 사이의 간격에 다리를 놓을 수 없습니다. 그러나 구주께서 우리를 대신해서 바로 그 일을 하시려고 오셨습니다. 하나님의 기준에 완벽하게 들어맞는 그리스도께서 우리의 실패와 악한 짓에 대한 대가를 지불하시려고 십자가에서 자신의 생명을 드리셨습니다. 우리가 결코 이루지 못할 것들을 그리스도께서 사랑으로 모두 이루신 것입니다.
