Be Content		자족하라
I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content. —Philippians 4:11		내가 궁핍하므로 말하는 것이 아니라 어떠한 형편에든지 내가 자족하기를 배웠노니  — 빌립보서 4:11

Contentment is hard to attain. Even the apostle Paul, a hero of the faith, had to learn to be content (Phil. 4:11). It was not a natural character trait for him.		자족하기란 매우 어려운 일입니다. 믿음의 영웅인 바울사도까지도 자족하기를 배워야만했습니다(빌립보서 4:11). 그것은 그의 타고난 성품이 아니었습니다.
For Paul to write that he was content in every situation is truly amazing. At the time of this writing, he was in jail in Rome. Charged with sedition, treason, and other serious crimes, he had appealed to the highest court: Caesar himself. Without other legal recourse and friends in high places, he had to wait for his case to be heard. It seems as if Paul had the right to be an impatient and unhappy person. Instead, he wrote to the Philippians to say that he had learned to be content.		바울이 모든 형편과 처지에서 자족했다고 기록한 것은 진실로 놀라운 일입니다. 이 글을 쓰고 있을 때 그는 로마의 감옥에 있었습니다. 선동과 반역, 그리고 다른 중대한 죄목들로 고발되어 그는 이미 로마황제 본인이 주재하는 최고 법정에 기소된 상태였습니다. 높은 신분의 변호인이나 친구도 없이 재판을 기다려야만 했던 바울은 보기에 당연히 초조하고 불행할 수밖에 없었습니다. 하지만 그는 빌립보교인들에게 자족하기를 배웠다고 편지에 쓰고 있습니다.
How did he learn this? One step at a time until he could be satisfied even in uncomfortable environments. He learned to accept whatever came his way (v.12) and to receive with thanks whatever help fellow Christians could give (vv.14-18). And most important, he recognized that God was supplying all he needed (v.19).		어떻게 그는 이것을 배웠을까요? 불안한 주위환경 속에서도 만족할 수 있을 때까지 그는 한 발자국씩 배워나갔습니다. 그의 앞길에서 마주친 모든 일을 그대로 받아들이기를 배웠고(12절), 동료 그리스도인들이 주는 도움을 감사함으로 받는 것을 배웠습니다(14-18절). 그러나 무엇보다 중요하게도, 하나님이 그의 모든 필요를 채워주시는 분이라는 사실을 그는 알았습니다(19절).
Contentment is not natural for any of us. The competitive spirit in us drives us to compare, to complain, and to covet. Few of us are in a predicament such as Paul’s, but we all face difficulties in which we can learn to trust God and be content. —C. P. Hia		자족하기는 우리 모두에게 타고난 성품이 아닙니다. 우리 안에 있는 경쟁의식은 우리로 하여금 서로 비교하고, 불평하고, 그리고 남의 것을 몹시 탐내게 합니다. 우리 가운데 극소수의 사람만이 바울이 처했던 그런 곤경에 처하겠지만, 하나님을 믿고 자족하는 것을 배울 수 있는 정도의 어려움은 누구나 다 겪게 됩니다.
O Lord, give me the grace to be  Content with what You give to me.  No, more than that, let me rejoice  In all You send, for it’s Your choice! —Anon.		오 주님, 주님께서 제게 주신 것에  자족할 수 있는 은혜를 베풀어주소서  아니 그보다 더, 허락하신 모든 것이 주님의 선택이시기에 주님이 주신 것을 기뻐하게 하소서
Contentment is not possessing everything but giving thanks for everything you possess.		자족이란 모든 것을 소유하는 게 아니라,  소유한 모든 것에 감사하는 것이다.
