The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, England, has a painting of a Roman soldier faithfully standing guard in ancient Pompeii. The painting was inspired by an archaeological discovery in Pompeii of an ashen-encased Roman soldier in full military gear. The volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in ad 79 covered that city in lava, capturing the people and their culture in a moment of time. The painting Faithful Unto Death is a testimony to the sentinel’s continuing vigil even as his world was being engulfed in fiery death.		영국 리버풀에 있는 ‘워커 미술관’에는 고대 폼페이에서 충실하게 보초를 서고 있는 한 로마 군인의 그림이 있습니다. 그 그림은 완전군장을 한 채로 재에 묻혀버린 폼페이의 한 로마 군인을 고고학적으로 발굴한데서 영감을 얻어 그린 것입니다. 서기 79년에 있었던 베수비우스화산 폭발은 도시를 용암으로 뒤덮고 사람들과 그들의 문화를 순식간에 가둬버렸습니다. ‘죽기까지 충성’ 이라는 그 그림은 온 세상이 불속으로 파묻히는 와중에도 계속해서 보초를 서는 경비병을 생생하게 증언해 보여줍니다.
The church at Smyrna—a first-century congregation that suffered persecution for Christ—was challenged to be faithful unto death. Their spiritual commitment had not gone unnoticed by the Master (Rev. 2:9). And for the suffering that was to come, Jesus offered this encouragement: “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested . . . . Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (v.10).		예수님 때문에 핍박을 받았던 1세기의 성도들이 있었던 서머나 교회는 죽도록 충성하라는 도전을 받았습니다. 그들의 영적헌신을 알고 계셨던 주님은(요한계시록 2:9) 다가올 고난에 대비하여 다음과 같이 격려하셨습니다. “네가 장차 받을 고난을 두려워 말라 볼지어다 마귀가 장차 너희 가운데서 몇 사람을 옥에 던져 시험을 받게 하리니......네가 죽도록 충성하라 그리하면 내가 생명의 면류관을 네게 주리라”(10절).
The Lord understands what we are going through now and what we will face in the future. Though there’s suffering in this world, He promises eternal life to His children. Our faith may be tested so that we may trust His faithfulness.		하나님의 신실하심을 의지하도록  우리의 믿음이 시험을 받을 수도 있다.
