| | NOT WHAT I PLANNED | | Rest in the LORD. - Psalm 37:7 | This isn’t the way I expected my life to be. I wanted to marry at 19, have a half dozen children, and settle into life as a wife and mother. But instead I went to work, married in my forties, and never had children. For a number of years I was hopeful that Psalm 37:4 might be for me a God-guaranteed promise: “He shall give you the desires of your heart.”
But God doesn’t always “bring it to pass”(v.5), and unmet desires stir up occasional sadness. Like mine, your life may have turned out differently than you planned. A few thoughts from Psalm 37 may be helpful (even though the psalm is primarily about comparing ourselves to the wicked).
We learn from verse 4 that unfulfilled desires don’t have to take the joy out of life. As we get to know God’s heart, He becomes our joy.
“Commit your way to the Lord”(v.5). The word commit means “to roll.” Bible teacher Herbert Lockyear, Sr., says, “‘Roll thy way upon the Lord,’ as one who lays upon the shoulders of one stronger than himself a burden which he is not able to bear.”
“Trust also in Him”(v.5). When we confidently entrust everything to God, we can “rest in the Lord”(v.7), for He is bringing about His best for our lives. -Anne Cetas | This isn’t the way I expected my life to be. | 내가 의도하지 않은 것 | | 여호와 앞에 잠잠하고 - 시편 37:7 | 지금의 내 인생은 내가 생각했던 것과는 많이 어긋나 있습니다. 나는 원래 열아홉 살에 결혼해서 여섯 명의 아이를 낳고 아내와 엄마로서 안정된 삶을 살기를 원했습니다. 그런데 나는 직장에 다니게 되었고, 40대가 되어서야 결혼을 했으며, 아이도 없습니다. 여러 해 동안 나는 “그가 네 마음의 소원을 네게 이루어 주시리로다”라는 시편 37편 4절의 말씀이 나를 향하여 보증하신 하나님의 약속이기를 바랐습니다.
하지만, 하나님은 언제나 뜻대로 이루어 주시지는 않고(5절), 실현되지 않은 소망은 때때로 우리에게 슬픔을 불러일으킵니다. 나의 경우처럼 당신의 삶도 계획했던 것과 다르게 전개되었을는지도 모릅니다. 시편 37편에 있는 몇몇 구절들은 (이 시편은 전반적으로 우리와 악인들을 비교하는 내용이지만) 그런 우리에게 도움이 될 수 있습니다.
4절에서는 이루어지지 않은 일 때문에 우리가 삶의 즐거움을 잃어버릴 필요가 없음을 말해주고 있습니다. 우리가 하나님의 마음을 알게 되면 하나님이 우리의 기쁨이 됩니다.
“네 길을 여호와께 맡기라”(5절). ‘맡기다’라는 말은 “펼쳐놓다”라는 뜻입니다. 성경교사인 허버트 라키어 경은 “감당할 수 없는 짐을 자기보다 강한 사람의 어깨 위에 놓듯이, ‘당신의 앞길을 주님 앞에 펼쳐놓아라.’”라고 말합니다.
“그를 의지하라”(5절). 우리가 마음 놓고 모든 것을 하나님께 맡기면, 하나님은 우리의 삶에 그분의 최선의 것으로 이루어주시기 때문에 우리는 “하나님 안에서 안식”(7절)할 수 있습니다. | 인생길 가는 동안
