The intricacy of the fragile pat-tern led me to assume that it had been created by a skilled artist. As I looked more closely at the photo, however, I saw the artist admiring his work from a corner of the photo. The “artist” was a worm, and its work of art was a par-tially eaten leaf. What made the image beautiful was not the destruction of the leaf but the light glowing through the holes. As I gazed at the photo, I began thinking about lives that have been eaten by the “worms” of sin. The effects are ravag-ing. Sin eats away at us as we suffer the consequences of our own bad choices or those of others. We are all its victims. But the photo also reminded me of the hope we have in God. Through the prophet Joel, God said to Israel, “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten”(Joel 2:25). And from Isaiah we learn that the Lord appointed him to “con-sole those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes”(Isa. 61:3). Satan does everything he can to make us ugly, but the Light of the World can make us beautiful-despite Satan’s best efforts. -Julie Ackerman Link God doesn’t remove all of our imperfections, but He makes us beautiful by shining through them. 모든 것이 아름다워 내가 전에 너희에게 보낸 큰 군대 곧 메뚜기와 느치와 황충과 팥중이가 먹은 햇수대로 너희에게 갚아주리니 - 요엘 2:25 파스텔풍의 보라색과 주황색 바탕에 놓은 검은색 레이스 모양의 디자인의 아름다움이 나의 주의를 끌었습니다. 복잡하고 섬세한 무늬는 그것이 유명한 예술가에 의해 만들어졌음을 암시하고 있었습니다. 그러나 사진을 더 자세히 보니 사진 속 모퉁이에서 작가가 자기의 작품을 감상하고 있었습니다. 그 “예술가”는 벌레였고 그 예술작품은 일부분이 갉아 먹힌 잎이었습니다. 그 작품을 아름답게 만드는 것은 파괴된 잎이 아니고 구멍을 통해서 오는 강렬한 빛이었습니다. 나는 그 사진을 눈여겨보면서 죄악의 “벌레”가 갉아먹은 인생들에 대하여 생각하기 시작했습니다. 그 결과는 아주 파괴적입니다. 죄악은 우리나 다른 이의 잘못된 선택의 결과로 고통을 받을 때 우리를 파먹어 들어갑니다. 우리는 모두 희생자들입니다. 그러나 그 사진은 또한 우리에게 하나님 안에서 소망이 있다는 것도 상기시켜 주었습니다. 요엘 선지자를 통하여 하나님은 이스라엘을 향하여 “내가 전에 너희에게 보낸 큰 군대 곧 메뚜기와 느치와 황충과 팥중이가 먹은 햇수대로 너희에게 갚아주리니”(욜 2:25)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이사야 선지자로부터 우리는 하나님께서 이사야에게 “무릇 시온에서 슬퍼하는 자에게 화관을 주어 그 재를 대신하며 기쁨의 기름으로 그 슬픔을 대신하며 찬송의 옷으로 그 근심을 대신하시고 그들이 의의 나무 곧 여호와께서 심으신 그 영광을 나타낼 자라 일컬음을 받게 하려 하시려고”(사 61:3) 명령하심을 배웁니다. 사탄은 우리를 추하게 만들려고 무엇이든 하지만 그의 많은 노력에도 불구하고 하나님의 빛은 우리를 아름답게 만들 수 있습니다. 주의하지 않으면 죄악은 풍성한 인생을 파괴한다네 그러나 일단 죄를 회개하면 하나님은 우리를 바로 세우시며 회복해 주신다네 하나님은 우리의 불완전함을 다 제거하시지는 않지만 그것들을 통해 빛나게 하심으로 우리를 아름답게 만드신다
