In The Screwtape Letters written by C. S. Lewis, a senior devil urges his young protégé to divert a Christian’s thoughts away from God and focus instead on the faults of the people around him at church.		씨 에스 루이스가 쓴 ‘스크루테이프의 편지’라는 책에는, 선임 마귀가 그의 젊은 심복 마귀를 재촉하여 한 그리스도인의 생각을 하나님으로부터 돌리고, 대신 교회의 자기 주변에 있는 사람들의 허물에 집중하도록 하는 장면이 나옵니다.
During a Sunday service, I found myself distracted and somewhat annoyed by a person near me who sang loudly off key and was out of sync during the unison readings. But when we bowed our heads for a time of silent prayer, it struck me that the Lord must surely be more pleased with that other person’s heart than with the judgmental feelings He saw in mine.		주일예배 시간에, 나는 찬송을 부르는 동안 내 가까이서 틀린 음정으로 큰 목소리로 부르고, 성경을 같이 봉독할 때도 보조를 맞추지 못하는 어떤 사람 때문에 주의를 빼앗기고 다소 짜증이 나 있었습니다. 그런데 우리가 고개를 숙여 조용히 기도하는 시간에, 주님은 다른 사람을 판단하고 있는 내 속마음보다는 분명히 그 사람의 마음을 더 기뻐하실 것이라는 생각이 번쩍 들었습니다.
A few days later I happened to read Proverbs 8 and was struck by verse 13: “Pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.” Throughout this chapter, wisdom calls to us to gain an understanding heart (v.5) and to find life and obtain favor from the Lord (v.35). The alternative is to go through life with a superior attitude while dying inside in the process (v.36).		며칠 후 나는 우연히 잠언 8장을 읽다가 13절 말씀에 충격을 받았습니다. “나는 교만과 거만과 악한 행실과 패역한 입을 미워하느니라.” 8장 전체를 통해 지혜는 우리로 하여금 마음이 밝으라 하고(5절) 생명을 얻고 여호와께 은총을 입으라고 합니다(35절). 그렇지 않으면 속은 죽어 가는데 우월의식을 갖고 살아가게 됩니다(36절).
Pride is a sword that wounds the person who uses it along with those against whom it is used. Arrogance robs us of all God longs to give us, but “by humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life” (22:4). —David McCasland		교만은 칼과 같아서 교만을 부리는 자신이나 그 상대방에게 상처를 줍니다. 거만은 하나님이 우리에게 주시기를 원하는 것들을 다 빼앗아갑니다. 그러나 “겸손과 여호와를 경외함의 보응은 재물과 영광과 생명”입니다(22:4).

Pride brings shame. Humility brings wisdom.		교만은 수치를 가져오지만,  겸손은 지혜를 불러온다.
