One early autumn morning as I drove to work in the dark, I was startled by a flash of brown in my headlights followed by the sound of something hitting the front of my car. I had clipped a deer at 70 miles per hour! It was only a glancing blow, and no damage was done to my car (or the deer, as far as I could tell), but it really shook me up. I had been in my usual “autopilot mode” for the familiar drive to the office, but the shock of the incident certainly got my attention. I was now fully alert and trying to calm a racing heartbeat. It was a most unpleasant wake-up call.		어느 이른 가을 아침, 어둠 속에 차를 몰고 출근하고 있을 때, 놀랍게도 갑자기 자동차 헤드라이트에 갈색 물체가 번쩍 보이더니 자동차 앞부분에 무엇인가 부딪치는 소리가 들렸습니다. 시속 70마일(약 110 킬로미터)로 달리다 사슴을 친 것입니다! 슬쩍 스치고 지나갔기에 자동차에 피해는 없었지만 (내 생각엔 사슴도 다치지 않은 것 같았습니다) 정말 섬뜩했습니다. 익숙한 출근길을 늘 하던 대로 “자동운전 모드”로 가고 있었는데, 그 사건의 충격은 내 주의를 환기시켜 주었습니다. 이제는 정신이 바짝 들었고 놀란 심장을 진정시켜야 했습니다. 그것은 정말 달갑지 않은 경종이었습니다.
The apostle Peter offers us a different kind of wake-up call—one that while unpleasant is necessary. He alerts us to a spiritual battle we are engaged in with a powerful enemy. Peter warns, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). This is a call to wake up, see the danger, and be ready for his attack!		베드로사도는 달갑지는 않지만 꼭 필요한 다른 종류의 경종을 우리에게 울려줍니다. 그는 우리가 아주 강한 적과 영적인 싸움을 하고 있다고 경고하고 있습니다. “근신하라 깨어라 너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾나니”(베드로전서 5:8). 이것은 깨어서 위험을 직시하고, 마귀의 공격에 대비하라는 경종입니다.
Only when we are aware of the danger that faces us every day will we consciously seek the help we need.
