Many homes near ours offer produce and perennials for sale by the road. Sometimes we’ll drive up to an unattended stand that operates on the “honor system.” As we make our selection, we put our money into a cash box or an old coffee can. Then we go home to enjoy the freshly picked fruits and vegetables.		우리 집 근처의 여러 가정에서는 농산물과 다년생 식물들을 도로변에 내놓고 팔고 있습니다. 가끔 우리도 아무도 지키지 않는 “무감독제도”로 운영되는 노점에 가서 마음에 드는 것들을 고른 후 현금통이나 오래된 커피통에 돈을 넣습니다. 그리고는 집에 가서 신선한 과일과 야채들을 맛있게 먹습니다.
But the honor system doesn’t always work. My friend Jackie has a flower stand in front of her house. One day, as she glanced out her window she saw a well-dressed woman with a big hat loading pots of perennials into the trunk of her car. Jackie smiled as she mentally calculated a $50 profit from her labors in the garden. But when she checked the cash box later, it was empty! The honor system revealed that this woman was not honorable.		하지만 이 무감독제도가 늘 지켜지는 것은 아닙니다. 내 친구 재키가 집 앞에 화초 진열대를 내 놓았었는데, 어느 날 그녀가 창밖을 내다보니 큰 모자에 잘 차려입은 여자가 다년생 꽃 화분들을 자동차 트렁크에 싣고 있었습니다. 재키는 그동안 정원에서 수고한 대가로 50불 정도의 수익을 얻게 되었다고 생각하며 흐뭇해했습니다. 그러나 나중에 열어보니 현금통은 텅 비어있었습니다! 무감독제도가 그 여자의 정직하지 않은 것을 드러낸 것입니다.
Perhaps to her, taking the flowers seemed like a small thing. But being honest in little things indicates how we will respond in the big things (Luke 16:10). Honesty in all areas of our lives is one way we can bring honor to Jesus Christ, our Savior.		어쩌면 그녀에겐 꽃들을 그냥 가져가는 것이 작은 일일지도 모릅니다. 하지만 작은 일에 정직하면 큰일에 어떤 반응을 보일지 알 수 있습니다(누가복음 16:10). 우리 구주 예수 그리스도를 영화롭게 하는 한가지 방법은 삶의 모든 면에서 우리의 정직함을 드러내는 것입니다.
The best “honor system” for a follower of Christ is Colossians 3:17, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” —Cindy Kasper		그리스도를 따르는 사람들에게 최고의 “무감독제도”는 “무엇을 하든지 말에나 일에나 다 주 예수의 이름으로 하라”는 골로새서 3장 17절 말씀입니다.

Honesty means never having to look over your shoulder.		정직함이란 남의 시선을 의식할 필요가 없다는 것을 의미한다.
