While our family was living in Kenya in the 1980s, we drove a young woman from Nairobi to visit her parents who lived near Lake Victoria. On the way, we stopped in the city of Kisumu to leave our luggage at a hotel where we would stay after taking her home. When our friend saw our hotel room that we considered an average-size room with two beds, she said, “All this for only five of you?” What we considered ordinary, she saw as luxurious. Riches are relative, and some of us who live in prosperous nations have a tendency to complain about a standard of living that others would gladly embrace.		우리 가족이 케냐에 살았던 1980년대에, 우리는 나이로비에서 온 한 젊은 여성이 빅토리아 호수 근처에 사는 그녀의 부모를 방문하는데 차로 데려다준 적이 있습니다. 가는 도중에 우리는 그 여성을 데려다주고 난 후 우리가 머물 호텔에 짐을 갖다 두려고 키수무시에 들렀습니다. 침대 두 개가 있는 우리 생각에는 보통 크기의 호텔 방을 본 그녀는 “겨우 다섯 명이 이걸 다 써요?”라고 말했습니다. 우리에게는 평범하다고 생각되는 것이 그녀에게는 호화스럽게 보였던 것입니다. 부유함이란 상대적인 것이어서, 가난한 나라의 사람들이 좋다고 생각하는 생활수준도 부유한 나라의 사람들에게는 불평거리가 될 수 있습니다.
Among the followers of Christ in Ephesus, some had more money than others. To Timothy, their pastor, Paul wrote, “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Tim. 6:17). Paul urged them to “be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share” (v.18).		에베소에 사는 그리스도인들 중에 어떤 사람들은 다른 사람들보다 돈을 더 많이 갖고 있었습니다. 그들의 목회자인 디모데에게 바울은 다음과 같이 편지를 썼습니다. “이 세대의 부한 자들을 명하여 마음을 높이지 말고 정함이 없는 재물에 소망을 두지 말고 오직 우리에게 모든 것을 후히 주사 누리게 하시는 하나님께 두라”(디모데전서 6:17). 바울은 그들에게 “선한 일을 행하고 선한 사업에 부하고 나눠주기를 좋아하라”(18절)고 권고했습니다.
Our natural tendency is to grasp what we have instead of freely giving to those in need. We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.		수입은 생활을 하게하고, 나눔은 삶을 이루어간다.
