Years ago I was a camp counselor for some rebellious boys. I found it challenging to deal with their behavior. They would mistreat the animals at the petting zoo and occasionally fight among themselves. So I adopted a calm and firm approach to leading them. And although they often exasperated me, I always made sure their physical needs were taken care of.		오래전 나는 반항적인 소년들을 위한 캠프에서 상담원으로 일하면서, 그들의 행동을 다루는 것이 쉽지 않다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그들은 동물들의 등을 쓰다듬으며 놀 수 있는 어린이 동물원에서 동물들을 학대하기도 하고, 때로는 서로 싸우기도 했습니다. 따라서 나는 부드럽고도 단호한 방법으로 그들을 지도했습니다. 아이들이 짜증나게 할 때도 많았지만, 나는 언제나 그들의 신체적 욕구에 대해 주의를 기울였습니다.
Even though I had a kind and loving exterior, I often felt on the inside that I was just “putting up with them.” That caused me to prayerfully reflect on how a loving heavenly Father provides for His rebellious children. In telling the story of the Israelites during the exodus, Paul said, “For a time of about forty years [God] put up with their ways in the wilderness” (Acts 13:18). In Greek “put up with” most likely means to patiently provide for people’s needs despite an ungrateful response.		나는 외적으로는 친절하고 사랑스러운 사람이었지만, 속으로는 단순히 “그들을 참고 견디는 것”일 뿐이라는 느낌을 자주 받았습니다. 하지만 그로 인해 나는 사랑의 하나님아버지께서 반항적인 그의 백성들을 어떻게 돌보셨는가를 기도하는 마음으로 돌아보게 되었습니다. 바울은 이스라엘백성들의 출애굽을 이야기하며 “광야에서 약 사십 년간 저희 소행을 참으시고”(사도행전 13:18)라고 말했습니다. 헬라어로 “참는다”라는 말은 감사할 줄 모르는 반응에도 참을성 있게 사람들의 필요를 공급해준다는 뜻입니다.
Some people may not react favorably to our efforts to show care and concern. When this happens, it may help to remember that God is patient with us. And He has given us His Spirit to help us respond with love to those who are hard to love or who are ungrateful (Gal. 5:22-23).		어떤 사람들은 보살핌과 관심을 보이는 우리의 노력에도 우호적으로 반응하지 않을 수 있습니다. 이런 일이 일어날 때, 하나님께서 우리를 참아주신다는 것을 생각하면 도움이 됩니다. 그리고 사랑하기 힘든 사람들이나 감사할 줄 모르는 사람들을 사랑으로 대할 수 있도록 도와주시려고 주님은 우리에게 성령님을 보내주셨습니다(갈라디아서 5:22-23).
