Elizabeth’s story was moving, to say the least. Following a terribly humiliating experience in Massachusetts, she caught a bus to New Jersey to escape her embarrassment. Weeping uncontrollably, she hardly noticed that the bus had made a stop along the way. A passenger sitting behind her, a total stranger, began making his way off the bus when he suddenly stopped, turned, and walked back to Elizabeth. He saw her tears and handed her his Bible, saying that he thought she might need it. He was right. But not only did she need the Bible, she needed the Christ it speaks of. Elizabeth received Him as a result of this simple act of compassion by a stranger who gave a gift.		엘리자베스의 이야기는 말할 나위 없이 감동적이었습니다. 그녀는 매사추세츠 주에서 매우 모욕적인 일을 겪고 난 후 당혹감을 벗어나려고 뉴저지로 향하는 버스를 탔습니다. 주체할 수 없이 흐느끼면서 그녀는 도중에 버스가 정차하는 것도 몰랐습니다. 그녀 뒤에 앉아 있었던 전혀 낯선 승객이 버스에서 내리려다 말고 갑자기 멈추어 서서 돌아서더니 엘리자베스에게로 다가갔습니다. 그 낯선 사람은 그녀의 눈물을 보고 혹시 필요할지 모르겠다고 하며 성경책을 그녀에게 건네주었습니다. 그의 생각은 옳았습니다. 그녀에게는 성경책뿐만 아니라 성경이 말하는 예수 그리스도도 필요했던 것입니다. 엘리자베스는 선물을 준 한 낯선 사람의 단순한 동정의 행동으로 말미암아 그리스도를 영접하게 되었습니다.
Jesus is our example of compassion. In Matthew 9, we read, “When He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd” (v.36). Not only did our Lord notice the pain and hurt of broken people, He responded to it by challenging His followers to pray for the Father to send out workers to respond to the hurts and needs of this dying world (v.38).		예수님의 긍휼하심은 우리의 본이 되십니다. 마태복음 9장은 다음과 같이 말합니다. “무리를 보시고 민망히 여기시니 이는 저희가 목자 없는 양과 같이 고생하며 유리함이라”(36절). 우리 주님은 절망하고 낙담한 사람들의 아픔과 고통을 아셨을 뿐만 아니라, 제자들에게 이 멸망해가는 세상에서 고통 받는 가난한 자들을 위해 일할 일군들을 보내달라고 하나님아버지께 기도하라고 요구하셨습니다(38절).
As we follow Christ’s example, a heart of compassion for shepherdless people can compel us to make a difference in the lives of others. —Bill Crowder		우리가 그리스도의 본을 따를 때, 목자 없는 사람들을 향한 우리의 동정어린 마음이 다른 사람들의 삶에 영향을 끼치게 될 것입니다.
Father, open my eyes to see the hurts and struggles of others. Then open my heart to respond to them, so that through me they may see You and Your love. Amen.		하나님아버지, 제 눈을 열어 다른 사람들의 아픔과 어려움들을 보게 하소서. 그리고 마음을 열어 그들을 대함으로, 그들이 저를 통하여 주님과 주님의 사랑을 보게 하소서. 아멘.
A world in despair needs Christians who care.		절망 가운데 있는 이 세상은 그리스도인들의 돌봄이 필요하다.
