Make It Count		의미있는 것으로 만들어라

In his battle with cancer, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc., said: “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything—all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure—these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.” His suffering influenced the choices he made.		애플사의 공동창업자인 스티브 잡스는 암과의 투병 중에 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 곧 죽을 것을 기억하는 것은 나에게 인생의 큰 결정들을 하게 돕는, 지금까지 내가 만난 도구 중 가장 중요한 도구이다. 왜냐하면 거의 모든 것, 즉 모든 외부의 기대들과 모든 자신감, 모든 당혹스러움이나 실패에 대한 두려움과 같은 것들은 죽음 앞에서 진정으로 중요한 것만 남기고 그냥 떨어져 나가기 때문이다.” 그의 고통은 이렇게 그가 선택을 내리는데 영향을 미쳤습니다.
In contrast, the apostle Peter wanted to motivate his readers to use their suffering to make their lives count for eternity. And he wanted Jesus’ suffering and death to inspire them to accept the spiritual conflict and persecution that would result from bearing the name of Jesus. Because they loved Jesus, suffering was going to be normative. Jesus’ suffering was to serve as motivation to give up sinful passions and to be obedient to the will of God (1 Peter 4:1-2). If their lives were going to count for eternity, they needed to stop indulging in fleeting pleasures and instead exhaust their lives on what pleased God.		반면, 베드로사도는 자신의 글을 읽는 사람들이 고통을 활용해 그들의 삶을 영원히 의미있는 것으로 만들 수 있게끔 동기부여를 해주기를 원했습니다. 그리고 예수님의 고난과 죽음이 그들을 자극하여 그들이 예수님 때문에 겪게 될 영적인 갈등과 박해를 받아들이기를 원했습니다. 그들이 예수님을 사랑했기 때문에 고난 받는 것은 정해진 일이었습니다. 예수님의 고난은 죄 많은 열정을 포기하게 하고 하나님의 뜻에 순종하게 하는 동기로 작용될 것이었습니다(베드로전서 4:1-2). 만약 그들의 삶이 영원을 준비하려 한다면, 그들은 사라져 버릴 즐거움을 탐닉하는 것을 멈추고, 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 것에 그들의 삶을 바쳐야 했습니다.
Remembering that Jesus suffered and died to forgive our sins is the most important thought we have to inspire us to make godly choices today and to make our lives count for eternity.  —Marvin Williams		우리로 오늘 경건한 선택을 하게하고 영원을 위해 우리의 삶을 의미있게 만들도록 자극을 주는데 가장 중요한 것은, 예수님이 우리의 죄를 용서하시려고 고통 받으시고 돌아가셨다는 사실을 기억하는 것입니다.
Jesus, You have suffered and died to forgive  our sin; may Your death and resurrection  inspire us to never return to where we’ve been.  Help us in our resolve to live for Your will alone.		예수님, 주님은 우리의 죄를 사하기 위해 고난  받으시고 돌아가셨습니다. 주님의 죽음과 부활이  우리에게 자극이 되어 우리가 있던 자리로 다시는  돌아가지 않게 해줍니다. 오직 주님의 뜻을 따라  살기를 다짐하오니 우리를 도와주소서.
Jesus’ death forgave my past sins  and inspires my present obedience.		예수님의 죽음은 우리의 과거의 죄를 용서하시고,  현재에 순종하게 만든다.
