Every March, the Iditarod Trail Race is held in Alaska. Sled dogs and their drivers, called “mushers,” race across a 1,049-mile route from Anchorage to Nome. The competing teams cover this great distance in anywhere from 8 to 15 days. In 2011, a record time was set by musher John Baker who covered the entire route in 8 days, 19 hours, 46 minutes, and 39 seconds. The teamwork between dogs and driver is remarkable, and those who compete are tenacious in their efforts to win. The first-place winner receives a cash prize and a new pickup truck. But after so much perseverance in extreme weather conditions, the accolades and prizes may seem insignificant and transient.		매년 3월, 알라스카에서는 개썰매 경주대회가 열립니다. 썰매 끄는 개들과 “머셔” 라고 불리는 개썰매 운전자들은, 앵커리지에서 놈까지 1,049 마일을 가로질러 달리게 됩니다. 경쟁하는 팀들은 이 먼 거리를 8일에서 15일 사이에 완주해야 합니다. 2011년에는 존 베이커라는 머셔가 전체 경로를 8일 19시간 46분 39초 만에 완주하며 신기록을 세웠습니다. 개들과 운전자 간의 협동은 아주 놀랍습니다. 그리고 참가자들은 이기기 위해 노력을 아끼지 않습니다. 1등을 한 선수는 현금과 새 픽업트럭을 부상으로 받는데, 극심한 날씨 조건 속에서 감당해야 하는 엄청난 인내에 비하면 그 영예와 상은 하찮고 덧없어 보이기도 합니다.
The excitement of a race was a familiar concept to the apostle Paul, but he used competition to illustrate something eternal. He wrote, “Everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown” (1 Cor. 9:25).		경주의 흥미진진함은 바울사도에게도 친숙한 개념이었지만, 그는 경쟁을 어떤 영원한 것을 예시하는 데 사용했습니다. 그는 “이기기를 다투는 자마다 모든 일에 절제하나니 저희는 썩을 면류관을 얻고자 하되 우리는 썩지 아니할 것을 얻고자 하노라”(고린도전서 9:25)라고 썼습니다.
Sometimes we are tempted to place our emphasis on temporal rewards, which perish with the passing of time. The Scriptures, however, encourage us to focus on something more permanent.
