During my days as a high school basketball coach,  I made a huge mistake. I sent some of my players to scout an opponent. They returned with this report: We can take those guys easily. Overconfident, we lost to that team. Does that sound familiar? To me, it sounds like the situation at Ai when Joshua sent out his scouts, who misjudged their opponent’s strength.		고등학교 농구코치로 있을 때 나는 커다란 실수를 저질렀습니다. 내 선수들 중 몇 명을 상대팀을 살펴보라고 보냈는데, 그들이 돌아와 “우리는 저들을 쉽게 이길 수 있습니다.”라고 보고했습니다. 그러나 지나친 자신감 때문에 우리는 그 팀에 지고 말았습니다. 어디서 들어본 이야기 같지 않습니까? 나에게는 여호수아가 아이성으로 정탐꾼을 보냈을 때 그들이 적의 힘을 잘못 판단했던 상황처럼 들립니다.
But there was more to the defeat at Ai than bad scouting. Israel lost the battle and 36 soldiers for several reasons that I think we can learn from.		하지만 아이성에서의 패배에는 잘못된 정탐보다도 더 큰 원인이 있었습니다. 이스라엘은 몇 가지 이유로 전쟁에 지고 서른여섯 명의 병사들을 잃었는데, 나는 그 이유들로부터 우리가 배울 것이 있다고 생각합니다.
Shortly before the loss at Ai, Joshua led his army successfully against Jericho because he knew God’s plan of attack. But there is no mention of Joshua consulting God before Ai. Prior to the battle of Jericho, the men had consecrated themselves to God (Josh. 5:2-8). Before Ai— nothing is said about Joshua’s men preparing themselves spiritually. The reason the Bible gives for the Israelites’ loss is sin in the camp. Achan had stolen from the spoils of Jericho (7:1). They could not defeat Ai until the sin was confessed and the people had consecrated themselves (7:16-26). Then God gave them a plan for victory (8:1-7).		아이성에서의 패배 바로 전 여리고성을 공격했을 때, 여호수아는 하나님의 공격계획을 알았기 때문에 그의 군대를 성공적으로 이끌었습니다. 하지만 아이성을 치기 전에는 하나님의 뜻을 물어보았다는 언급이 없습니다. 여리고성 싸움 전에, 남자들은 하나님 앞에 자신들을 봉헌했습니다(여호수아 5:2-8). 하지만 아이성을 치기 전에는 여호수아의 사람들이 자신을 영적으로 준비했다는 말이 없습니다. 성경은 이스라엘 진영에서 저지른 죄를 그들의 패배 이유로 들고 있습니다. 아간이 여리고성의 전리품을 훔쳤던 것입니다(7:1). 그들은 그 죄를 자백하고 자신들을 봉헌하기 전까지는 아이성을 이길 수가 없었습니다(7:16-26). 회개와 봉헌이 있은 후에 하나님은 그들에게 승리를 위한 계획을 주셨습니다(8:1-7).
