I was glad to see the final days of the year draw to a close. It had held so much sorrow, sickness, and sadness. I was ready to welcome January with its very own brass band!		나는 그 해의 마지막 날이 다가오는 것이 반가웠습니다. 한 해 동안 많은 비애와 아픔, 그리고 슬픔을 겪었기 때문입니다. 그래서 나는 새해를 축하하는 관악대와 더불어 1월을 반갑게 맞이할 준비를 하고 있었습니다.
But as the first month of the new year arrived, so did one bit of sad news after another. Several friends lost their parents. My dad’s brother slipped away in his sleep. Friends discovered they had cancer. A colleague’s brother and a friend’s son both died tragically and abruptly. Rather than the sad times ceasing, the new year seemed to bring a whole new tsunami of sorrow.		그러나 그 새해의 첫 달이 되자, 슬픈 소식들이 줄을 이었습니다. 몇몇 친구들이 부모님을 잃었고, 나의 큰아버지가 주무시다가 돌아가셨습니다. 친구들이 암 선고를 받았고, 동료의 형제와 친구의 아들이 갑작스레 비극적인 죽음을 맞이했습니다. 새해가 되면 슬픈 일이 없기를 바랐는데, 오히려 새해가 되면서 새로운 슬픔이 해일처럼 밀려왔습니다.
John 16:33 tells us, “In the world you will have tribulation.” Even God’s children are not promised a life of ease, of prosperity, nor of good health. Yet we are never alone in our trouble. Isaiah 43:2 reminds us that when we pass through deep waters, God is with us. Although we don’t always understand God’s purposes in the trials we experience, we can trust His heart because we know Him.		요한복음 16장 33절은 우리에게 “세상에서는 너희가 환난을 당하리라”고 말하고 있습니다. 하나님의 자녀들조차도 순탄하고 유복하고 건강한 삶을 약속받지는 못합니다. 그러나 우리는 환난 중에도 결코 혼자가 아닙니다. 이사야 43장 2절은 우리가 깊은 물속을 지나갈 때 하나님이 우리와 함께 하심을 상기시켜줍니다. 우리가 시험 중에 있을 때 하나님의 의도하시는 바를 비록 항상 이해하지는 못하지만, 우리는 하나님을 알기 때문에 그분의 마음을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.
Our God is a God of abundant love and “neither death nor life. . . nor things present nor things to come [will ever] separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38-39). When trouble comes, His presence is His promise. —Cindy Hess Kasper		우리 하나님은 사랑이 충만하시며, “사망이나 생명이나......현재 일이나 장래 일이나 우리를 우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없습니다”(로마서 8:38-39). 하나님은 환난 때에 함께 하시겠다고 약속하셨습니다.

Faith is believing that God is present when all we hear is silence.		아무것도 들리지 않을 때에도 하나님이 거기 계시다고 믿는 것이 믿음이다.
