  • Most of us look to friends and colleagues for rewards: a slap on the back, a hero’s medal, applause, a sincere compliment. But according to Jesus, the more important rewards await us after death. It’s possible that the most significant human acts of all are carried out in secret, seen by no one but God. In a nutshell, the message of the kingdom is this: Live for God and not other people.

    As Jesus explained it, we are accumulating a kind of savings account, storing up “treasures in heaven” (Matt. 6:20) rather than on earth-treasures so great that they will compensate for any amount of suffering. The Old Testament has dropped a few scant hints about an afterlife, but Jesus spoke plainly about a place where “the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father” (Matt. 13:43).

    In their quest for a kingdom, the Jews of Jesus’ day had been looking for signs of God’s approval in this life, primarily through prosperity and political power. Beginning with this speech, Jesus changed the focus to the life to come (ch.6). He discounted success in this visible world. Invest in the future life, He cautioned. After all, rust, a thief, or a lowly insect can destroy all else that we accumulate (v.20). -Philip Yancey

    and colleagues, but rather to look to You for approval.
    Teach us to put into practice the principles of the

  • 우리는 대개 친구나 동료들로부터 보상받기를 바랍니다. 등을 두드려 주는 것, 영웅의 메달, 박수, 진심어린 감사 같은 것들입니다. 그러나 예수님에 의하면 더 중요한 상급이 죽음 이후에 우리를 기다리고 있습니다. 우리 인간의 행위 중 가장 중요한 일들이 오직 하나님 한분만 아신 채 은밀하게 행해지기도 합니다. 간단히 말해, 다른 사람들을 위해 살지 말고 하나님을 위해 살라는 것이 천국의 메시지입니다.
    
    예수님이 설명하신 것처럼, 우리는 이 세상이 아니라 “보물을 하늘에” 쌓아가며(마 6:20), 일종의 저축 계좌를 불려나가고 있는 것입니다. 그 보물들은 너무나 엄청난 것이어서 이 땅에서의 그 어떤 고통도 보상해줄 것입니다. 구약성경은 내세의 삶에 대해 가끔씩 언급할 뿐이었지만, 예수님은 “의인들은 자기 아버지 나라에서 해와 같이 빛나리라”(마 13:43)라고 천국에 대해 분명하게 말씀하셨습니다.
    
    예수님 당시의 유대인들은 천국을 추구하면서, 주로 물질적 번영이나 정치적인 권력을 통해 이 세상에서 하나님께 인정받으려 하였습니다. 하지만 예수님은 마태복음 6장에서부터 말씀의 중심을 다음 세상으로 옮기셨습니다. 주님은 보이는 이 세상에서의 성공을 그다지 중요하게 여기지 않으시고, 내세에 투자하라고 경고하셨습니다. 우리가 쌓아놓는 다른 모든 것들은 결국에는 녹슬거나, 도둑맞거나, 아니면 좀들로 인해 다 없어져버릴 것입니다(20절).

    칭찬을 구하기보다는 주님께 인정받기를
    구하도록 도와주소서. 우리를 가르치셔서
    산상수훈의 원리들을 실천할 수 있게 하소서.

  • 영원한 세상에서의 상급은 이 세상에서 인정받는 것과는 무관하다.
