고집쟁이 본능 Zax Nature

너희 관용을 모든 사람에게 알게 하라 [빌립보서 4:5]

닥터 수스의 기발한 이야기들 중에는 프락스 대평원을 가로질러가다 서로 맞닥뜨린 “북쪽행 고집쟁이”와 “남쪽행 고집쟁이”에 대한 이야기가 있습니다. 이 두 고집쟁이는 서로 코가 맞닿은 상황에서 누구도 비켜서려 하지 않습니다. 첫번째 고집쟁이는 길이 막혀 “전 세계가 멈춰 서더라도” 절대로 물러서지 않겠다고 성내며 고집을 피웁니다. (그러나 세상은 탈 없이 돌아가고 이 둘 옆으로 지나가는 고속도로가 만들어집니다.)

이 이야기는 불편하지만 인간의 본성을 정확히 보여줍니다. 우리에게는 자신이 옳다는 반사적인 “욕구”가 있어서, 파괴적일지라도 그 본능에 고집스럽게 집착하는 경향이 있습니다!

In one of Dr. Seuss’ whimsical stories, he tells of a “North-Going Zax and a South-Going Zax” crossing the Prairie of Prax. Upon meeting nose to nose, neither Zax will step aside. The first Zax angrily vows to stay put—even if it makes “the whole world stand still.” (Unfazed, the world moves on and builds a highway around them.)

The tale offers an uncomfortably accurate picture of human nature. We possess a reflexive “need” to be right, and we’re prone to stubbornly cling to that instinct in rather destructive ways!

하지만 다행히 하나님께서 자비롭게도 인간의 완고한 마음을 부드럽게 만들어주십니다.

Happily for us, God lovingly chooses to soften stubborn human hearts.

물론 분명한 태도를 보여야 할 때가 있지만, 주님과 같은 접근 방식은 완고한 고집쟁이들과는 많이 다르게 보일 것입니다! 우리 삶의 너무 많은 것들이 사실 싸울 가치가 없는 것들입니다. 우리는 스스로를 무너뜨릴 때까지 사소한 문제로 서로 다툴 수도 있지만(갈라디아서 5:15), 자존심을 삼키고 지혜로운 조언을 상냥하게 받아들여 형제자매들과의 연합을 추구할 수도 있습니다.

Of course there are times to take a firm stand, but a Christlike approach will look a lot different than an unyielding Zax! So many things in life aren’t worth fighting over. We can bicker with each other over every trivial concern until we destroy ourselves (Galatians 5:15). Or we can swallow our pride, graciously receive wise counsel, and seek unity with our brothers and sisters.—Tim Gustafson
