When a general returned from a victorious battle, ancient Rome would stage a parade to welcome the conqueror home. The parade would include the general’s troops, as well as trophy captives who had been brought along as evidence of the victory. As the parade made its way through the city, the crowds would cheer their hero’s success.		고대 로마에서는 전투에서 승리한 장군이 돌아올 때 그 개선장군의 귀환을 환영하는 행진을 마련하곤 하였습니다. 그 행렬에는 개선장군의 군대뿐만 아니라 승리의 증거로 데리고 온 전승 포로들도 포함되어 있었습니다. 그 행렬이 도심을 지나갈 때 군중들은 그들의 영웅이 성공한 것을 축하하는 갈채를 보냈습니다.
To prevent the general’s ego from becoming unduly swollen, a slave rode along with him in his chariot. Why? So that as the Roman throngs heaped praise on the general, the slave could continually whisper in his ear, “You too are mortal.”		그런데 장군의 자만심이 과도하게 커지는 것을 막기 위해 한 노예를 장군의 전차에 같이 태웠습니다. 왜냐고요? 그것은 로마인들이 열광적으로 장군을 칭송할 때 그 노예가 장군의 귀에 대고 “당신도 언젠가는 죽을 인 간에 지나지 않습니다.”라고 끊임없이 속삭일 수 있게 하기 위해서였습니다.
When successful, we too may lose sight of our own frailty and allow our hearts to fill with destructive pride. James pointed us away from the danger of pride by pointing us to humility and to God. He wrote, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). The key to that statement is grace. Nothing is more wonderful! The Lord alone deserves thanks and praise—especially for the grace He has lavished on us.		성공가도를 달릴 때, 우리도 역시 자신의 나약함을 보지 못하고 파멸로 이끄는 자만심으로 우리 마음을 채우게 되기 쉽습니다. 야고보는 우리로 겸손히 하나님을 바라보게 함으로써 자만해지는 위험에서 멀어지게 해줍니다. 그는 “하나님이 교만한 자를 물리치시고 겸손한 자에게 은혜를 주신다”(야고보서 4: 6)고 기록하였습니다. 이 성구의 핵심은 은혜입니다. 은혜보다 더 뛰어난 것은 없습니다! 오직 주님만이, 특별히 우리에게 아낌없이 주신 그 은혜로 인해, 감사와 찬양을 받으실 만한 분이십니다.
