In whatever a man does without God, he must fail miserably—or succeed more miserably,” wrote George MacDonald (1824–1905), a Scottish novelist, poet, and Christian minister. This intriguing statement is often cited by modern speakers and writers and appears in MacDonald’s book Unspoken Sermons.		스코틀랜드 소설가이자 시인이며 목사인 조지 맥도날드(1824-1905)는 “사람이 어떤 일이든 하나님 없이 하면 초라하게 실패를 하게 되거나, 아니면 성공을 해도 더 초라하게 된다.”고 썼습니다. 현대 연사들과 작가들이 자주 인용하는 이 멋진 표현은 맥도날드의 책 ‘말하지 않은 설교’에 나옵니다.
MacDonald was dealing with the difficult subject of a Christian’s self-denial and how we are to apply this teaching of Jesus: “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it” (Luke 9:23-24).		맥도날드는 그리스도인의 금욕이라는 어려운 주제와, 다음과 같은 예수님의 가르침을 어떻게 적용해야 하는가를 다루고 있는 것입니다. “누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 날마다 제 십자가를 지고 나를 좇을 것이니라 누구든지 제 목숨을 구원코자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 구원하리라”(누가복음 9:23-24).
Rather than merely trying to suppress our natural desires, MacDonald said that true self-denial means “we must see things as [Christ] saw them, regard them as He regarded them; we must take the will of God as the very life of our being . . . . We are no more to think, ‘What should I like to do?’ but ‘What would the Living One have me do?’ ”		맥도날드는 진정한 금욕이란 우리의 자연스런 욕망을 억제하려는 소극적인 노력이 아니라, “모든 것을 예수님이 보신 것처럼 보고, 예수님이 여기신 것처럼 여기고, 하나님의 뜻을 우리의 생명처럼 여기며, 더 이상 ‘나는 무엇을 하고 싶은가?’를 생각하지 않고 ‘하나님은 내가 무엇을 하기를 원하시는가?’를 생각하는 것”을 의미한다고 말했습니다.
Getting only what we want is succeeding miserably. True success is found in “losing” our lives for Jesus’ sake and finding them again full  and free in His will. —David McCasland		우리가 원하는 것을 얻는 것은 초라한 성공에 불과합니다. 진정한 성공은 예수님을 위해 우리의 생명을 “버리고” 주님의 뜻 안에서 충만하고 자유로운 생명을 다시 발견하는 것입니다.

The spirit of humility and self-denial precedes a deeper and closer walk with God.		겸손과 금욕의 정신은 하나님과 더 깊고 더 가깝게 동행하게 한다.
