There’s Power		능력이 있다

When my sister found out she had cancer, I asked my friends to pray. When she had surgery, we prayed that the surgeon would be able to remove all of the cancer and that she wouldn’t have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation. And God answered yes! When I reported the news, one friend remarked, “I’m so glad there’s power in prayer.” I responded, “I’m thankful that God answered with a yes this time.”		내 누이가 자신이 암에 걸렸다는 것을 알았을 때, 나는 친구들에게 기도를 요청했습니다. 그녀가 수술을 받을 때에도 의사가 암 조직을 완전히 제거하여 화학요법이나 방사선 치료를 받을 필요가 없게 해달라고 기도했습니다. 그리고 하나님은 우리의 기도에 응답하셨습니다! 이 소식을 전했을 때, 한 친구가 “기도에 능력이 있어 너무 기쁘다.”고 말했고, 나도 “기도를 들어주신 하나님께 감사한다.”고 말했습니다.
James says that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (5:16). But does “effective” and “fervent” mean the harder we pray, or the more people we ask to pray, the more likely God is to answer with a yes? I’ve had enough “no” and “wait” answers to wonder about that.		야고보는 “의인의 (간절하고 열렬한) 간구는 역사하는 힘이 많다”(5:16)고 말합니다. 그런데 “간절한”이라는 말과 “열렬한”이라는 말이 우리가 더 열심히 기도하거나 더 많은 사람에게 기도를 요청할수록 하나님이 우리의 기도를 더 잘 들어주신다는 것을 의미할까요? 나의 경우 “안 돼”나 “기다려”라는 응답을 너무나 많이 들었기에 과연 그럴까하는 생각이 듭니다.
Prayer is powerful, but it’s such a mystery. We’re taught to have faith, to ask earnestly and boldly, to persevere, to be surrendered to His will. Yet God answers in His wisdom and His answers are best. I’m just thankful that God wants to hear our hearts and that no matter the answer, He is still good.		기도에는 능력이 있지만, 알 수 없는 어떤 것이기도 합니다. 우리는 믿음으로 열심히 담대하게 구하고, 인내하며, 하나님의 뜻에 순종해야 한다고 배웁니다. 하나님은 그분의 지혜에 따라 응답하시고, 그 응답은 최선입니다. 나는 하나님이 우리의 마음의 소리를 듣기 원하신다는 것과, 어떤 응답이든지 그분이 여전히 선하신 분이라는 것에 감사할 뿐입니다.

Your helplessness is your best prayer.” We can do helplessness quite well. —Anne Cetas		“기도와 무력함은 불가분의 관계이다. 왜냐하면, 무력한 자만이 진정으로 기도할 수 있기 때문이다...... 당신의 무력함이 당신의 최고의 기도이다.”라고 한 올레 홀레스비의 말을 나는 좋아합니다. 우리는 무력해지는 것만큼은 곧 잘 하니까요.
Lord, I’ve been taught many things about prayer—be specific, be bold, be surrendered, be strong in faith, be persistent. Today I recognize my helplessness and Your power  as I share my heart with You. Amen.		주님, 기도는 구체적이고 담대하고 순종적이고  믿음 안에서 강하고 지속적이어야 한다고 배웠습니다. 오늘 주님께 나의 마음을 아뢰면서  나의 무력함과 주님의 능력을 깨닫습니다. 아멘
Prayer is the child’s helpless cry to the Father’s attentive ear.		기도는 귀를 기울이고 있는 아버지를 향한  무력한 아이의 울부짖음이다.
