During a difficult recession, I organized a support group for fellow Christians to help them cope with unemployment. We provided resumé reviews, networking, and prayer support. One problem emerged: Whenever someone got a job, he or she almost never returned to the group to offer encouragement. That increased the loneliness and isolation of those left in the group.		어려운 불황의 시기에 나는 동료 그리스도인들이 실직에 잘 대처할 수 있도록 지원하는 단체를 조직했습니다. 우리는 이력서를 검토해주거나 사람들과 연결시켜주고, 기도로 지원해주었습니다. 그런데 한 가지 문제가 생겼습니다. 직장을 구하게 된 사람들이 도움을 제공한 그 단체로 돌아와 격려해주는 사례가 거의 없었던 것입니다. 그로 인해 단체 안에 남아 있는 다른 사람들은 더 많이 외로워하고 고립되어 갔습니다.
Worse, though, were comments from those who had never experienced a job loss. They mirrored the accusations of Job’s friends in his suffering: “If you were pure and upright, surely now [God] would awake for you, and prosper [you]” (8:6). By chapter 12, Job is starting to express things in terms modern workers can understand. He says that he feels despised by those whose life is easy (v.5).		더 나쁜 것은 직장을 한 번도 잃어보지 않은 사람들의 말이었습니다. 그것은 욥이 고통중에 있을 때 와서 한 친구들의 비난과 같았습니다. “또 청결하고 정직하면 정녕 너를 돌아보시고 네 의로운 집으로 형통하게 하실 것이라”(8:6). 12장에서 욥은 현대의 직장인들도 이해할 수 있는 말로 자신을 표현하기 시작합니다. 그는 편하게 사는 자들에게 괄시를 받는 것 같다고 말하고 있습니다(5절).
When things are going well for us, we may start to think that we who don’t have troubles are better somehow, or are more loved by God, than those who are struggling. We forget that the effects of this fallen world are indiscriminate.		모든 일이 다 잘 되어갈 때, 우리는 고통 중에 있는 사람들보다 문제가 없는 우리가 더 잘났거나 하나님께 더 많은 사랑을 받는 사람이라는 생각을 할 수 있습니다. 타락한 이 세상은 차별 없이 우리에게 영향을 미친다는 것을 잊고 있는 것이지요.
We are all loved by the Lord and we all need Him—in good times and bad. The successes, abundance, and positions that God has given to us are tools to help us encourage others in their time of need. —Randy Kilgore		좋을 때나 나쁠 때나 우리는 모두 주님의 사랑을 받고 있으며 주님이 필요합니다. 그리고 하나님이 우리에게 허락하신 성공과 풍요와 지위는 우리가 어려운 이웃들을 격려하도록 도와주는 도구들입니다.
Give us the humility, Lord, not to act like Job’s friends who accused him of sin because of his trials. Show us how to help those who are struggling so that we might give the kind of encouragement You have given us.		주님, 우리에게 겸손한 마음을 주셔서 시련을 받는다는 이유로 욥을 죄인으로 몰아세운 친구들처럼 행동하지 말게 하소서. 힘겹게 살아가는 사람들을 어떻게 도와줄 수 있는지 우리에게 보여주셔서  우리가 당신에게서 받은 격려를 우리도 줄 수 있게 해주소서.
Humility toward God makes us gentle toward others.		하나님 앞에 겸손할 때 다른 사람들을 온화하게 대할 수 있다.
