When a friend started making random despairing statements, people were concerned for him and started giving advice and offering encouragement. As it turned out, he was simply having fun by quoting song lyrics out of context to start a conversation. Friends who tried to help wasted their time by offering help he didn’t need and advice he didn’t want. The consequences of my friend’s misleading statements were not serious, but they could have been. In taking time to respond to his false need, someone could have neglected someone else’s truly serious need.		한 친구가 횡설수설 절망적인 말을 하기 시작하자 사람들은 걱정하며 충고와 격려를 주기 시작하였습니다. 그러나 알고 보니 그는 대화를 시작하기 위해 노래 가사를 문맥을 무시하고 인용하면서 혼자 재미있어 하고 있었습니다. 도와주려 했던 친구들은 그가 필요하지도 않은 도움과 그가 원하지 않은 충고를 주려고 시간만 낭비한 셈이 되었습니다. 내 친구가 잘못 꺼낸 말들은 심각한 결과를 낳지는 않았지만 자칫 심각할 수도 있었습니다. 그의 그릇된 필요에 반응하는데 시간을 보내느라 정말로 도움이 필요한 사람을 소홀히 할 수도 있었기 때문입니다.
Some people who take words out of context just want to gain attention or win an argument. But others are more sinister. They twist truth to gain power over others. They endanger not only lives but also souls.		문맥을 무시한 말을 하는 사람은 단순히 사람들의 관심을 받기를 원하거나 논쟁에서 이기기를 원합니다. 그런데 더 나쁜 사람들도 있습니다. 그들은 상대방을 압도하기 위해 사실을 왜곡합니다. 이런 사람들은 생명뿐만이 아니라 영혼도 위험에 빠지게 합니다.
When people use words to manipulate others to behave in certain ways—or worse, when they quote the Bible out of context to convince others to do wrong—there’s only one defense: We need to know what God truly says in His Word. Jesus was able to resist temptation with the truth (Luke 4). We have the same resource.
