Wind And Fire		바람과 불

Sometimes when I want to start a fire, the wind puts it out. But when I try to keep a fire burning, wind keeps it going. So, in the first situation, I label wind “bad” because it thwarts my plans; in the other, I label it “good” because it helps me accomplish what I want to get done.		불을 붙이려할 때 바람이 불어서 불이 꺼질 때가 종종 있습니다. 그러나 불을 계속 피우려고 할 때에는 바람이 불을 계속 살려줍니다. 처음 경우에는 바람이 나의 계획을 방해하기 때문에 “나쁜” 것이고, 두 번째 경우에는 내가 원하는 것이 이루어지도록 도와주기 때문에 바람은 “좋은” 것입니다.
This paradox illustrates how we judge things by the way they affect us. We declare circumstances or people “bad” if they thwart our plans or cause us inconvenience. We judge circumstances or people “good” if we agree with them and they support our cause.		이 역설은 사물을 판단할 때 그것이 우리에게 미치는 영향을 근거로 우리가 판단한다는 사실을 보여줍니다. 우리는 환경이나 사람들이 우리의 계획을 방해하거나 우리를 불편하게 할 때 “나쁘다”고 선언합니다. 반대로 마음이 맞거나 우리에게 도움을 줄 때는 “좋다”라고 판단합니다.
But God is the One who determines what is good or bad, and He does so not by how it affects our plans but by whether or not it accomplishes His. His plan is that we would be “a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people.” And His purpose for us is to “proclaim the praises of Him who called [us] out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9).		그러나 무엇이 좋고 나쁜지를 결정하시는 분은 하나님이십니다. 하나님은 우리의 계획에 어떤 영향을 끼치는가가 아니라, 하나님의 계획을 성취하는가 하지 않는가에 따라 그런 결정을 내리십니다. 하나님의 계획은 우리가 “왕 같은 제사장들이요 거룩한 나라요 그의 소유된 백성”이 되는 것입니다. 그리고 우리를 향한 그분의 목적은 “우리를 어두운 데서 불러내어 그의 기이한 빛에 들어가게 하신 이의 아름다운 덕을 선전하게 하려 하심”(베드로전서 2:9)에 있습니다.
To accomplish God’s good purpose, we are to respect all people, love other believers, fear God, and honor those who rule over us—even when something doesn’t seem good to us (v.17). These kinds of actions may fan a spark of belief in those who observe our responses to “bad” circumstances and most of all bring praise to God. —Julie Ackerman Link		우리가 하나님의 선한 목적을 이루기 위해서는 뭇 사람을 공경하고, 형제들을 사랑하며, 하나님을 두려워하고, 비록 우리에게 좋게 보이지 않을 때라도 우리를 다스리는 자를 공경해야 합니다(17절). 이 같은 행동들은 “나쁜” 환경에 우리가 어떻게 반응하는가를 주시하고 있는 사람들에게 믿음의 불꽃을 피워주며, 무엇보다 하나님께 영광을 가져오게 될 것입니다.

When things look bad, remember God is good.		상황이 힘들어 보이면 하나님의 선하심을 기억하라.
