In all the years I’ve worked with people, I’ve yet to meet someone whose life was all messed up because he or she kept God’s commands. Yet, in a day when personal freedom is celebrated as an inalienable right, talk of conforming our lifestyle to God’s ways is often viewed as an infringement. And anyone who speaks out in favor of God’s boundaries is ruled out of bounds. But in this frenzy to be free, it should not go unnoticed that our society is increasingly marked with a haunting sense of meaninglessness and despair.		오랜 세월 동안 사람들과 함께 일해 오면서, 나는 하나님의 명령을 따랐기 때문에 그들의 인생이 엉망으로 되어버린 사람을 아직까지 만나보지 못했습니다. 그러나 개인의 자유가 빼앗길 수 없는 권리로 여겨지고 있는 이 시대에, 하나님의 방법대로 맞추어 살라고 말하는 것은 마치 권리를 침해하는 것처럼 간주되곤 합니다. 그리고 하나님의 경계선을 옹호하며 말하는 사람은 누구나 다 이상한 사람으로 규정되어 버립니다. 그러나 이렇게 미친 듯이 자유를 추구하는 가운데에서도 우리는 이 사회가 끝없이 무의미함과 절망감속으로 빠져들고 있다는 사실을 놓치지 말아야 합니다.
God’s people should have a distinctly different view of boundaries. Like the psalmist, we must realize that a blessed life comes from delighting in the law of the Lord (Ps. 1:2)—not in living like those who “walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take” (v.1 niv). A believer in Jesus will recognize that God’s boundaries are not meant to take the pizazz out of life. Instead, they are divine fences constructed with God’s wisdom to help us avoid the treachery and trouble of reckless living.		하나님의 사람들은 경계선에 대해 뚜렷하게 다른 관점을 가지고 있어야 합니다. 시편기자처럼 축복된 삶은 “악인의 꾀를 좇거나 죄인의 길에 서는”(1절) 사람들처럼 사는데서 오는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 율법을 기뻐하는 데서 온다는 것을 깨달아야 합니다(시편 1:2). 예수님을 믿는 성도들은 하나님이 정하신 경계선이 우리의 삶에서 활력을 빼앗고자 하는 것이 아님을 알게 될 것입니다. 오히려 그것은 부주의한 삶에 따르는 곤경과 어려움을 겪지 않도록 우리를 보호하시려고 하나님의 지혜로 세워주신 거룩한 울타리입니다.
Next time you are tempted to break through God’s boundaries, remember His loving purpose in putting up fences.
