After all these years, I still don’t fully understand prayer. It’s something of a mystery to me. But one thing I know: When we’re in desperate need, prayer springs naturally from our lips and from the deepest level of our hearts.		여태까지 신앙생활을 해왔으면서도, 나는 아직도 기도에 대해 확실히 이해하지 못하고 있습니다. 그것은 내게 여전히 미지의 세계에 속해 있습니다. 그러나 한 가지 알고 있는 것은, 우리가 깊은 절망에 빠지게 되면 우리의 입술과 마음 깊은 곳으로부터 기도가 저절로 흘러나온다는 사실입니다.
When we’re frightened out of our wits, when we’re pushed beyond our limits, when we’re pulled out of our comfort zones, when our well-being is challenged and endangered, we reflexively and involuntarily resort to prayer. “Help, Lord!” is our natural cry.		우리가 곤경에 빠져 쩔쩔맬 때, 손을 쓸 수 없는 상황에 처했을 때, 그리고 불안한 상황으로 내몰리거나, 우리의 행복이 깨어질 위기에 처했을 때, 우리는 자신도 모르게 기도에 매달리며 자연스럽게 이렇게 부르짖습니다. “주님, 도와주세요!”
Author Eugene Peterson wrote: “The language of prayer is forged in the crucible of trouble. When we can’t help ourselves and call for help, when we don’t like where we are and want out, when we don’t like who we are and want a change, we use primal language, and this language becomes the root language of prayer.”		저자 유진 피터슨은 다음과 같이 썼습니다. “기도의 언어는 역경의 도가니 속에서 만들어진다. 우리가 곤경에 빠져 도움이 필요할 때, 원치 않는 상황에서 벗어나려 할 때, 혐오스러운 나 자신을 변화시키고자 할 때, 사람은 가장 원초적인 언어를 사용하게 되며, 이 언어가 기도의 근간이 된다.”
Prayer begins in trouble, and it continues because we’re always in trouble at some level. It requires no special preparation, no precise vocabulary, no appropriate posture. It springs from us in the face of necessity and, in time, becomes our habitual response to every issue—good and bad—we face in this life (Phil. 4:6). What a privilege it is to carry everything to God in prayer! —David Roper		기도는 어려움에 빠졌을 때 시작하며, 우리는 항상 어느 정도의 어려움 가운데 있기에 기도를 지속하게 됩니다. 기도는 특별한 준비나 정교한 어휘, 또는 적합한 자세가 필요한 것이 아닙니다. 무엇인가 필요한 상황이 되면 나오다가, 머지않아 살아가면서 직면하는 좋고 나쁜 여러 가지의 상황에 대해 습관적인 반응으로 나오게 됩니다 (빌립보서 4:6). 하나님께 모든 것을 기도로 아뢸 수 있다는 것은 얼마나 놀라운 특권입니까!
