시간을 초월하여 전해지는 편지 Time-Traveling Letters

성령께서 영감을 주시고 인도해주신 덕분에 성경에는 오랜 시간을 거쳐 우리에게 전해진 서신서들이 있습니다. 교회가 성장하면서 예수님의 제자들이 유럽과 소아시아에 있는 교회들에게 그리스도 안에서의 새 삶을 이해시키려고 편지들을 썼는데 그 중 많은 편지들이 오늘날 우리가 읽는 성경 안에 담겨 있습니다.

이 서신서 저자들이 독자들에게 전하려 했던 것은 무엇일까요? 요한은 그의 첫 번째 편지에서 “태초부터 있었고, 우리가 들었고, 우리가 눈으로 보았으며, 자세히 보고, 우리의 손으로 만진 것”에 대해 쓴다고 설명하면서, 살아 계신 그리스도와의 만남에 대해 쓰고 있습니다(요한1서 1:1). 그는 독자들이 서로서로, 그리고 “아버지와 그의 아들 예수 그리스도”와 “사귐” 을 가지도록 쓴다고 하면서(3절), 우리가 서로 사귐이 있을 때 우리의 기쁨이 충만하게 될 것이라고 했습니다(4절). 성경의 서신서들은 시간을 뛰어넘어 영원하신 하나님과의 사귐으로 우리를 인도해 줍니다.

In the Bible, we have a collection of letters that—thanks to the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit—have made their way through time to us. As the Christian church grew, Jesus’ disciples wrote to local churches across Europe and Asia Minor to help the people understand their new life in Christ; many of those letters were collected in the Bible we read today.

What did these letter-writers want to convey to readers? John explains, in his first letter, that he’s writing about “that which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched.” He’s writing about his encounter with the living Christ (1 John 1:1). He writes so that his readers may “have fellowship” with one another, and with “the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ” ( v. 3). When we have fellowship together, he writes, our joy will be complete ( v. 4). The letters in the Bible draw us into a fellowship that’s beyond time—fellowship with the eternal God.-AMY PETERSON
