홀로코스트에서 생존한 코리 텐 붐 여사는 용서의 중요성을 알았습니다. 그녀는 그의 책 ‘주님을 향한 방랑자’에서 가장 좋아하는 마음속의 이미지는 용서 받은 죄가 바다 속으로 던져지는 것이라고 말합니다. “우리가 우리의 죄를 자백할 때, 하나님은 그것들을 가장 깊은 바다로 던져버려서 영원히 없어지게 하십니다…… 그러고는 하나님께서 거기에 ‘낚시 금지’라는 표지판을 세우신다고 나는 믿습니다.”

그녀는 예수님을 믿는 사람들이 때로 놓치는 중요한 진리 하나를 말합니다. 그것은 하나님이 우리의 잘못을 용서하시면 그 용서는 완전한 용서라는 사실입니다! 우리는 나쁜 감정들에 사로잡혀 과거의 부끄러웠던 일들을 계속 들먹일 필요가 없습니다. 오히려 하나님의 은혜와 용서를 받아들이고 하나님을 자유롭게 따르면 됩니다.

수치심이나 무가치하다는 생각에 사로잡히면 온 마음으로 하나님을 섬기지 못하고 오히려 과거에 묶여버리고 맙니다. 만일 잘못한 일로 앞이 막혀 있다고 느낀다면, 하나님께서 주시는 용서와 새 생명의 선물을 온전히 믿게 해달라고 하나님께 간구하십시오. 하나님은 당신의 죄를 이미 바다 깊이 던져버리셨습니다!

Holocaust survivor Corrie ten Boom knew the importance of forgiveness. In her book Tramp for the Lord, she says her favorite mental picture was of forgiven sins thrown into the sea. “When we confess our sins, God casts them into the deepest ocean, gone forever. . . . I believe God then places a sign out there that says No Fishing Allowed.”

She points to an important truth that believers in Jesus can sometimes fail to grasp—when God forgives our wrongdoing, we’re forgiven fully! We don’t have to keep dredging up our shameful deeds, wallowing in any mucky feelings. Rather we can accept His grace and forgiveness, following Him in freedom.

When we’re caught in feelings of shame and unworthiness, we can’t serve God with our whole hearts. Instead, we’re restricted by our past. If you feel stymied by the wrong you’ve done, ask God to help you fully believe in His gift of forgiveness and new life. He’s cast your sins into the ocean!-AMY BOUCHER PYE
